Geological field notes need provenance. An interpretation is useful only when another geologist can connect it to a station, exposure, measurement, sample and direct observation.
Open every station clearly
State the project, station ID, date and time, location method, exposure type, weather and access limitations. If coordinates are recorded elsewhere, reference the controlled field system rather than relying on speech recognition for the only copy.
Use an observation ladder
- Lithology and visible characteristics.
- Contacts, structures and orientation measurements.
- Weathering, alteration or mineralisation.
- Sample IDs and exact collection point.
- Interpretation and competing explanations.
- Follow-up mapping, analysis or verification.
Separate observation from interpretation
Use explicit markers such as “observed”, “reported”, “working interpretation” and “to verify”. A fluent AI summary can turn a tentative field hypothesis into established geology unless the distinction remains visible.
Create a traceable sample record
| Field | Required detail |
|---|---|
| Sample ID | Unique verified identifier |
| Station and location | Map or coordinate reference |
| Material | Neutral description before interpretation |
| Collection point | Exact feature or interval |
| Purpose | Question or analysis intended |
| Custody | Bag, label and transfer record |
Verify measurements separately
Strike, dip, thickness, distance and other figures should be entered into the approved field record. Repeat them aloud for context, then check the transcript against the instrument or notebook.
Preserve competing hypotheses
Record evidence supporting and opposing each interpretation. Identify the mapping, laboratory work or specialist review that could distinguish them. Do not let repetition determine the preferred explanation.
Link photographs, sketches and maps
Speak image and sketch references. Verify orientation and location after the field session. Keep the source media and metadata connected to the station record.
Work safely
Use stable positions away from cliffs, traffic, water, machinery and unstable ground. Follow site, weather and lone-working controls before dictating. Complete a structured debrief later where direct recording would distract from safety.
Post-field quality workflow
- Transfer and preserve source files.
- Correct station, place and technical names.
- Verify measurements and sample IDs.
- Match images and maps.
- Separate observations, interpretations and follow-up questions.
- Enter the approved geological record.
How NERALVO Halo fits
NERALVO Halo can support offline spoken logs and later DOWAY processing. Maps, samples, measurements and checked field records remain authoritative.
Bottom line
A valuable geological recording preserves the route from direct evidence to interpretation rather than hiding it inside a polished summary.
