Business ideas often appear before there is time to assess them. Voice capture preserves the customer problem, trigger and reasoning quickly, but a useful idea system must separate evidence from enthusiasm and force every promising concept toward a test, a review date or a deliberate rejection.
Quick verdict: Record the user, problem, evidence, proposed solution, assumptions and cheapest useful test. Process the note into a visible idea pipeline and never allow “captured” to mean “approved.”
The seven-field business-idea note
- User: who experiences the problem?
- Problem: what are they trying and failing to do?
- Trigger: what caused you to notice it?
- Evidence: what supports the observation?
- Solution hypothesis: what might help?
- Assumptions: what must be true?
- Next test: what is the cheapest credible way to learn more?
Example:
“User: small legal firms. Problem: client calls create a second admin task because attendance notes must be typed afterwards. Trigger: repeated comments about losing twenty minutes after calls. Evidence: three conversations and competitor positioning. Solution hypothesis: a thin dedicated recorder that creates a draft note. Assumptions: firms will approve the workflow and value the time saving. Next test: interview ten solicitors using a consistent question set.”
Separate evidence, assumption and invention
| Category | Example |
|---|---|
| Evidence | Five customers asked for faster meeting follow-up. |
| Assumption | They will pay £129.99 for a dedicated device. |
| Hypothesis | A recorder plus structured AI summary will reduce admin enough to justify the price. |
| Idea | Create a legal-professional product bundle. |
| Decision | Run a ten-person interview test before building the bundle. |
AI summaries may blur these categories. Label them manually before an idea enters the business plan.
Keep recordings short enough to evaluate
Most idea notes should last one to three minutes. Longer strategic thinking can be useful, but split it into the problem, evidence, solution, route to market and risks so each part can be reviewed independently.
Use an idea pipeline
- Inbox: captured but not assessed
- Clarify: missing user, problem or evidence
- Investigate: needs desk research or interviews
- Test: has a defined experiment
- Pursue: approved for active work
- Park: useful but not now
- Reject: deliberately closed with a reason
Every item needs a current status, owner and review date. “Parked” should not mean “kept forever.”
Score ideas consistently
Use a simple 1–5 score for:
- Problem severity
- Evidence strength
- Audience size or value
- Strategic fit
- Ability to reach the user
- Revenue or impact potential
- Delivery effort
- Cost
- Risk
- Speed of learning
Do not pretend the score is objective. Its purpose is to expose why one idea receives attention and another does not.
Find the riskiest assumption
Examples include:
- The problem is frequent enough to matter.
- The target user can approve the purchase.
- The price is acceptable.
- The technology works in the real environment.
- The data workflow meets professional requirements.
- The audience can be reached affordably.
- The benefit is large enough to change behaviour.
Test the assumption that could kill the idea, not the feature that is easiest to demonstrate.
Design the cheapest credible test
| Question | Possible test |
|---|---|
| Does the problem exist? | Structured customer interviews and workflow observation |
| Will people click? | Landing page or advert test with clear intent measurement |
| Will they pay? | Pre-order, deposit, paid pilot or direct offer |
| Can it work? | Prototype or controlled workflow pilot |
| Can the business deliver it? | Supplier, margin, support and fulfilment model |
Record why an idea was rejected
A short rejection reason prevents the same weak idea returning every month:
- Problem not validated
- Audience too expensive to reach
- Margin inadequate
- Strategic mismatch
- Unacceptable legal or operational risk
- Timing wrong
- Existing solution already sufficient
Protect confidential and valuable information
Do not speak sensitive strategy, customer information, unreleased product details, credentials or intellectual-property material in public spaces. Store business notes in an approved private system, restrict sharing and apply a retention policy to raw recordings and transcripts.
Run a weekly idea review
- Empty the capture inbox.
- Merge duplicates.
- Clarify missing fields.
- Score only ideas with enough context.
- Choose the next test for promising items.
- Assign an owner and date.
- Park or reject the rest deliberately.
- Review whether active tests changed the evidence.

Frequently asked questions
How detailed should an idea recording be?
Enough to identify the user, problem, evidence, assumption and next test—usually one to three minutes.
Should every idea be researched?
No. First remove duplicates and weak-fit ideas. Research the concepts with enough potential and evidence to justify the time.
What makes an idea actionable?
A specific problem, a defined user, a testable assumption, an owner and a next learning step.
Can AI decide which idea is best?
It can organise and compare drafts, but it cannot reliably judge real strategy, risk, customer access, team capacity or willingness to pay without human evidence.
Business-idea checklist
- User and problem stated
- Evidence separated from assumption
- Solution labelled as a hypothesis
- Riskiest assumption identified
- Cheapest useful test designed
- Pipeline status assigned
- Owner and review date added
- Confidential information protected
- Duplicate or rejected ideas cleared
- Test results update the record
Capture preserves the spark. Evidence earns the commitment.
