Marine surveys require precise vessel, compartment and component identification. A note such as “corrosion near the pump” is weak unless another person can locate the condition, inspect the supporting evidence and understand the surveyor's limitations.
Begin with survey scope
State the vessel, survey reference, purpose, date, location, people present and areas included or excluded. Different survey types require different evidence and reporting boundaries.
Use a compartment-to-component route
Announce the deck or compartment, system, component and viewing position before each observation. Repeat the location after moving or resuming recording.

Separate condition from cause
Describe what is visible before suggesting a mechanism. Corrosion, cracking, leakage or wear may have several causes. Preserve uncertainty and identify the evidence needed for a supported conclusion.
Verify terminology, units and identity
Check equipment names, serials, dimensions, thickness readings and standards against drawings, certificates, instruments and survey documentation. Do not allow the transcript to invent a component or classification.
Link photographs and measurements
Speak image numbers and viewing direction. Keep measurement records in the approved field sheet or instrument system, then verify the transcript against them.
Record inaccessible areas
State compartments, surfaces or systems that could not be inspected and why. Explain whether a return visit, dismantling, cleaning or specialist test is required.
Work within vessel safety
Recording must not distract during ladders, confined access, machinery movement, work aloft or hazardous areas. Follow vessel, permit and communication procedures first. Use a stable authorised position or complete a post-inspection debrief.
