Electrical contracting records need to distinguish what the customer reported, what the electrician observed, what was measured and what was formally certified. A spoken note can preserve context, but one misheard circuit number, test value or protective-device rating can make the draft unsafe or unusable.

Do not rely on transcription for circuit designations, ratings or values. Check the board, schedule, instrument and controlled document.

Keep safe isolation outside the note-taking workflow
Use the approved safe-isolation procedure before handling the recorder. Complete identification, isolation, locking, warning, proving and verification through the appropriate process. A voice note may reference the isolation after the fact, but it is not proof that the circuit is dead.
Do not dictate while working near exposed live parts, climbing, drilling, pulling cable or performing another task that needs full attention.
Turn a survey into a design-input sheet
A useful survey note should capture the proposed load, existing supply information, routes, access, environmental conditions, bonding and earthing questions, fire and building interfaces, customer preferences and work by others.
Mark every assumption. Examples include concealed construction, spare capacity, route availability and the condition of existing equipment. Verify the information needed for design before issuing a quotation or starting work.

Never copy transcribed figures into a certificate without comparing them with the original test record.
Use a discrepancy log before closeout
Record anything that does not match the expected installation:
- circuit label does not match the equipment served
- drawing or schedule revision is unclear
- access prevents full inspection
- existing damage or alteration affects the work
- test result requires investigation
- client request conflicts with the agreed scope
- another trade must complete enabling work
Assign an owner and disposition. Do not bury discrepancies inside a general summary.
Protect household and site information
Electrical surveys can expose alarm systems, access controls, network equipment, building layouts and customer information. Avoid recording codes, passwords or unnecessary security detail. Follow site rules and use a short checked job record rather than distributing the full transcript.

Recording can improve continuity between the initial complaint, survey, installation and closeout. Electrical safety and certification still depend on controlled procedures, verified measurements and competent responsibility.
