Muffled speech usually means the microphone is receiving too little direct voice and too much obstruction, distance or reflected sound. AI transcription cannot fully recover detail that was never captured clearly.
Diagnose the sound before changing settings
Record the same sentence in four positions: device in open air, attached to the phone, inside the usual case and at the normal meeting distance. Compare the original audio, not only the transcript.
Common causes
- A thick phone case covers or redirects the microphone.
- The recorder is under papers, clothing or a laptop.
- The speaker is too far away.
- The device is facing a hard surface or wall.
- Hands repeatedly cover the microphone.
- Noise reduction is reacting to poor source audio.
Fix placement first
- Remove obstructions.
- Place the recorder closer to the main speakers.
- Keep the microphone opening clear.
- Avoid soft bags and pockets during capture.
- Test the exact phone case and magnetic position.
- Use turn-taking in difficult rooms.
Use a before-and-after test
Check quiet speech, normal speech, names, numbers and technical words. Improvement should be audible and should reduce correction time, not merely raise volume.
